Today we’ll learn about the word make. You may know that this word stands for producing something, but its real potential is much more than that

I’m going to tell you a story about two people whose relationship didn’t work out well

She always wore shiny make up, fancy clothes and high heels, and seemed to be educated and smart

He liked her, but couldn’t make out what kind of person she was and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to date her

Finally he made up his mind and asked her out for a drink

When they met she asked how he would feel if instead of having a drink they were to make love in a hotel

He thought she was making fun of him, so he said goodbye and left. Sadly, that was their first and last date

Ok, now let me explain what the word make means in these sentences

The first phrase: “She always wore shiny make up” means “She used a lot of bright cosmetics”

“He couldn’t make out what kind of person she was” means “he couldn’t understand what kind of person she was”

The next phrase “he made up his mind” means “he made a decision”

“They were to make love in a hotel” means “they were to have sex in a hotel”

And finally “He thought she was making fun of him” means “He thought she wasn’t serious and wanted to laugh at him”

Now if you please look at these pictures again and answer a few questions:

How did the woman look?

What did she suggest them to do when they met?

Why wasn’t he sure he wanted to date her?

Did she ask him out?

Did he think she was serious with him?

Let’s check out similar situations where the word make will work

It takes her hours to finish her make up

He’s trying to make out what his adversary’s next move will be

She made up her mind, but she doesn’t know how to tell him

“Make love not war” was hippies’ famous slogan in 1960s

Try to practice the word make in similar situations and see you again in the next episode of One Word English
