Today we’re going to learn about the word put. The basic meaning of put is to place something somewhere. But this word has some other meanings as well.

Look at this girl. Let’s guess what’s on her mind.

If I eat too many burgers, I’ll put on weight

If I put on weight, my fiancé will cheat on me

If he cheats on me, I won’t put up with that and dump him

If I dump him we’ll put off the wedding till I find another boyfriend

It means I won’t put on my wedding dress soon… Oh my God, I should stop eating burgers!

Ok, let’s see what the word put means in these sentences.

“Put on weight” means “gain weight, become fatter”

“ If he cheats on me, I won’t put up with that” means “If he cheats on me, I won’t accept that unpleasant situation”

“We’ll put off the wedding” means “we’ll delay the wedding till a later time”

“Put on my wedding dress ” means “put the dress onto my body”

Look at the pictures again, listen to my questions and try to answer quickly.

What will happen if her fiancé cheats on her?

What will happen if she eats too many burgers?

Will she have a wedding if she dumps her fiancé?

Why will her fiancé cheat on her?

What will happen if they put off the wedding?

The word put will work in similar situations.

The boy is putting on a tie

The man is very busy so he has to put off the meeting

Parents put up with their naughty kids

She’s always on diet because she doesn’t want to put on weight.
