Today we’re going to learn about the word put. The basic meaning of put is to place something somewhere. But this word has some other meanings as well.
Look at this girl. Let’s guess what’s on her mind.
If I eat too many burgers, I’ll put on weight
If I put on weight, my fiancé will cheat on me
If he cheats on me, I won’t put up with that and dump him
If I dump him we’ll put off the wedding till I find another boyfriend
It means I won’t put on my wedding dress soon… Oh my God, I should stop eating burgers!
Ok, let’s see what the word put means in these sentences.
“Put on weight” means “gain weight, become fatter”
“ If he cheats on me, I won’t put up with that” means “If he cheats on me, I won’t accept that unpleasant situation”
“We’ll put off the wedding” means “we’ll delay the wedding till a later time”
“Put on my wedding dress ” means “put the dress onto my body”
