Hi, this is One Word English. In this program you will learn only one English word and some tips for using it in different situations.

Today we’re going to learn the word Come. You won’t believe in how many ways you can use this simple word.

What would you do if you saw a nice girl (or boy) in a street and fell in love right away? Let me tell you what my friend Bob’s did when he first met Jenna.

Bob came across a nice girl in a street and fell in love!

He was to come up with an idea of how to introduce himself.

Suddenly he saw a poster with a movie that just came out.

Bob came up to her and said: “Hey, let’s not go to the dumb movie! Would you come over to my place tonight to count stars in the sky?”

Ok, let’s see what the word come means in these sentences.

The first phrase “Bob came across a nice girl” means “Bob met a nice girl by chance, all of a sudden”.

“He was trying to come up with an idea” means “He was trying to produce an idea”.

The next phrase “a movie that just came out” means “a movie that just became available at cinemas”.

“Bob came up to her” means “he approached her”, and finally the last phrase “come over to my place” means “Arrive to my house”.

Let’s say Bob’s story together.

Bob came across a nice girl in a street and fell in love!

He was trying to come up with an idea how to introduce himself.

Suddenly he saw a poster with a movie that just came out.

Bob came up to the girl and said: “Hey, let’s not go to the dumb movie! Would you come over to my place tonight to count stars in the sky?”

Look at the pictures again, listen to my questions and try to answer quickly.

When did Bob fall in love?

What was he thinking about?

What poster did he see?

Did he ask the girl out to see the movie?

You see, we can use the word come in many different situations. Here are some of them.

They can’t come up with a solution.

They came across a great pub in and decided to stop by.

His famous drama An Inspector Calls came out in 1945.

As usual look around, find situations where you can use the word come and practice it!
