Hi, this is One Word English, which means you are going to learn only one word but also some tips for using it so your English will sound better.

Today we’ll consider the word Mind. You know that this word stands for "mental capacity", for the ability to think and make decisions. But the real power of this word is much more than that.

Look at this couple

They don’t mind dating in a cheap joint

She won’t change her mind about him even if he gets too much booze

And he never minds if she sometimes casts an eye on other men

They both bear in mind that they are committed to each other

Ok, now let me explain what the word mind means in these sentences

The first phrase "They don’t mind dating in a cheap joint" means "They feel OK that they date in a cheap bar"

"She won’t change her mind about him" means "She won’t change her opinion about him"

The next phrase "he never minds if she casts an eye on other men" means "he doesn’t care if she sometimes looks at other men"

And finally "they both bear in mind" means "they both remember"

Let’s repeat these sentences together

They don’t mind dating in a cheap joint

She won’t change her mind about him even if he gets too much booze

And he never minds if she sometimes casts an eye on other men

They both bear in mind that they are committed to each other

Now you are ready to answer my questions:

Will she change her mind about him if he drinks a lot?

What don’t they mind doing?

He gets jealous when she looks at other men, doesn’t he?

What do they bear in mind?

Let’s think of situations when this word will work.

In this game you can’t change your mind after showing your cards

They don’t mind spending all day doing nothing, because it’s their holiday!

This businessman always bears in mind that other people can hardly be trusted

Look around and try to use the word mind in various everyday situations. You can say "I don’t mind staying up all night, because I love my job!"
